Re: The Marathon Calendar

Revision v1.11

30-Oct-2011: Atlanta: Andrew
6-Nov-2011: NYC: Ben, Weir
14-Jan-2012: Houston: 2012 Olympic Trials
15-Jan-2012*: Houston: Tom
29-Jan-2012: Miami: Jason, Ben, 1xJersey Girls
29-Apr-2012: Big Sur: Everyone
X-Sept/Oct/Nov-2012*: TBD: Everyone
X-Jan-2013*: Disney/Goofy Ch: Weir, Ben, Handzo, Duncan

A. Looks like everyone's set until next summer. In scanning the Jersey marathons, and what I know from people who've run them, here's my take (Go to http://www.marathonguide.com/ and search in New Jersey). Asbury Park: 8 loop course, mostly for relay runners, I guess this could be our NJ Ekiden. Atlantic City: Probably a lot like Va Beach, generally boring, flat, poor course design. New Jersey: Boring, flat, horrible course design, typically hot weather. Ocean Drive: Looks not half bad, flat, point-to-point, maybe a little marshland/boardwalk. The others: All the other ones listed for my state are trail runs.

B. So why the big slam on NJ races? Well, if you're like me and want to hit every state, you want to run a fun marathon, and all the non-trail ones in NJ are Jersey Shore. There's rumor here that we might put on one in my town next year (I say we, b/c I was partially involved in our successful half http://www.superherohalf.com that had almost 1200 runners). Joe and Kat have run with me up here, and Keith ran with me on a lot of what will probably become the course, so I invite you to ask them what they think about running in my neck of the woods.

C. Expected logistics. Think mid/late October (the weather's wonderful here now). Flat, gently rolling course (google Loantaka and Great Swamp). Both half and full. Expected price for full ($60 to $90 for late). I can fit several people in my house, and I sure I can convince friends to host others.

Re: The Marathon Calendar

v2.0

Now: Chicago reg open ($150) /NYC reg open ($266)
18-Mar-2012: Publix Georgia: Andrew, the Dad: Half: Joe, Ben, Jason?, Allie?, Kat?
10-Apr-2012: Goofy ($310)/Disney ($140) reg opens.
29-Apr-2012: Big Sur: Ben, Weir, Kat, Keith, Duncan, Fisher, Timmy, Tom, Handzo, Allie, Hilary (SC), Ann, 2xNM, Duncan's fiancée, Kristen (cousin), Desiree (NJ), Mark (NJ)
Summer-2012: Grandfather Mtn: anyone, anyone?
17-Sept-2012: Boston reg opens: ($150)
Sept/Oct-2012: Looking for ideas
X-Jan-2013: Disney/Goofy: Weir, Ben, Handzo, Jason, Duncan, Desiree

A. I don't think NJ is going to happen this fall. I heard some things fell through, and not all the towns in the area are onboard. So they don't want to start advertising this late.

B.I'd really like to do a summer marathon (preferably June/July). I'll be working on updating my marathon calendar.

C.For the fall I want to do something in late September/early October (to give me enough time to train for Goofy). Registration for Goofy opens Apr 10th. Put international/domestic as options (and again, I'm working on updating the calendar).

Re: The Marathon Calendar

1) I am in the Publix Georgia Half

2) Ben must of had some insider info about me doing Disney. I'm not doing the Goofy Challenge, but am undecided about the half or full. If Publix Georgia goes well and I get a half PR then I probably won't want to do the half and would look more towards the full. If it goes poorly then I will probably need a revenge race and will more likely sign up for the half.

3) Over the next 6 months I will be evaluating race options for a future marathon in 2013/2014. Early contenders include Atlanta, Publix Georgia, Disney, Chicago, Grandma's, and a return to ING Miami. If I end up getting a job and moving across the country in the summer to somewhere with a good local marathon obviously that would be in play as well.

4) Why exactly would someone want to run Grandfather Mountain? See if you can get me with your best sales pitch.

v2.1

Now: Chicago reg open ($150) /NYC reg open ($266)
18-Mar-2012: Publix Georgia: Andrew, the Dad: Half: Joe, Ben, Jason, Victor, Allie?, Kat?
10-Apr-2012: Goofy ($310)/Disney ($140) reg opens.
29-Apr-2012: Big Sur: Ben, Weir, Kat, Keith, Fisher, Timmy, Tom, Handzo, Allie, Hilary (SC), Ann, 2xNM, Kristen (cousin), Desiree (NJ), Mark (NJ)
14-July-2012*: Grandfather Mtn: anyone, anyone? maybe Ben? Allie? Weir?
17-Sept-2012: Boston reg opens: ($150)
Sept/Oct-2012: Looking for ideas
X-Jan-2013: Disney/Goofy: Weir, Ben, Handzo, Jason, Duncan, Desiree

A. Even checking up on marathonguide to see if my spreadsheet missed any summer marathons, I don't think it really does. GMM is the only summer one on the east coast (maybe one in VT?). All the rest are west coast (MT, CA, OR, WA, AK, etc). And the random ones in the mid-country probably didn't make it on my sheet for a reason. Who wouldn't want to finish in front of a Braveheart crowd on Grandfather Mtn? (still debating this myself).

B. Top 10-domestic marathons. (thinking that with Big Sur travel, save international for later). These are ranked.
1. Prairie Fire, Wichita, KS Oct-14
2. Des Moines, IA Oct-21
3. Mt. Desert Island, Bar Harbor, ME Oct-14 (no half, only 2 and 3-person relay)
4. Maine, Portland, ME Sept-30
5. Mohawk-Hudson, Albany, NY Oct-7
6. Kansas City, MO Oct-20
7. Twin Cities, Minneapolis, MN Oct-7
8. Hartford, CT Oct-13
9. Portland, OR Oct-7 (half closed except for charity)
10. New Hampshire, Bristol, NH Sept-29

C. Tim had mentioned other late fall options that he might do (San Antonio, MCM, Dallas etc) .

Re: The Marathon Calendar

v2.2

Now: NYC reg open ($266)
10-Apr-2012: Goofy ($310)/Disney ($140) reg opens.
16-Apr-2012: Boston: See below
29-Apr-2012: Big Sur: Ben, Weir, Kat, Keith, Fisher, Timmy, Tom, Handzo, Allie, Ann, 2xNM, Kristen (cousin), Desiree (NJ), Mark (NJ), Danny (NJ)
14-July-2012*: Grandfather Mtn: anyone, anyone? maybe Ben? Allie? Weir?
17-Sept-2012: Boston reg opens: ($150)
Sept/Oct-2012: Looking for ideas
7-Oct-2012: Chicago: NJ/IL friends
28-Oct-2012: Atlanta: Andrew
28-Oct-2012: Marine Corps: Timmy
4-Nov-2012: NYC: NJ friends
12,13-Jan-2013: Disney/Goofy: Weir, Ben, Handzo, Jason, Duncan, Desiree

A.
If you're thinking about Grandfather Mountain, keep me posted. It's still on my to-do list. Best place to fly into is probably Charlotte (2hr drive).

B.
My fall ranked list:
1. Prairie Fire, Wichita, KS Oct-14
2. Des Moines, IA Oct-21
3. Mt. Desert Island, Bar Harbor, ME Oct-14 (no half, only 2 and 3-person relay)
4. Maine, Portland, ME Sept-30
5. Mohawk-Hudson, Albany, NY Oct-7
6. Kansas City, MO Oct-20
7. Twin Cities, Minneapolis, MN Oct-7
8. Hartford, CT Oct-13
9. Portland, OR Oct-7 (half closed except for charity)
10. New Hampshire, Bristol, NH Sept-29

The input I've gotten so far has been: Tom and the west coast are probably less interested in these. And Weir doesn't want to do NY or MN (even though he's done MA twice). I however, need to do NY again and run a sub 3hr time. And I have one (kind of non-running friend) who said Maine (tho not specific as to which one)

C.
Boston people I know:
Todd Henry, GA 5707
Mike Anis, NJ 626
Rich Burke, NJ 185
Zsuzsanna Carlson, NJ 12486
Brian Crowley, NJ 481
Rocco Della Serra, NJ 1382
Mike Dixon, NJ 106
Dave Franz, NJ 6863
Elliott Frieder, NJ 416
Nate Jennato, NJ 7027
Mark Ladolcetta, NJ 2060
Barry Lass, NJ 1202
Karl Leitz, NJ 8771
Mark Nyhan, NJ 7358
Justin Scheid, NJ 202
Joe Singleton, NJ 2037
Carl Weaver, NJ 13298
Wow, I've got a lot of people to track

A. Fall Rankings
This is my ranking of the earlier marathons I sent out:

2. Maine, Portland, ME Sept-30 ($65 reg til Jul 31, prize money)

4. Des Moines, IA Oct-21 ($78.50 reg til Jul 22, unattainable prize money)

6. Twin Cities, Minneapolis, MN Oct-7 (10-miler, no half marathon) ($125 reg, unattainable prize money)
7. Hartford, CT Oct-13 ($95 reg til Sep 15, unattainable prize money)

B. Goofy/Disney notes
Other notes:
Goofy registration is already 61% full. If you're thinking about running it (and you have to sign up as Goofy, not the two races separately), you might want to track this http://espnwwos.disney.go.com/events/rundisney/wdw-marathon

The Healey bros and I are also in Chicago with the NJ/IL friends.

Ben, if you still want to do Grandfather Mountain with someone, you may want to give Gerber a call. He mentioned that he might be interested in doing it
