Verona Labor Day 5K
Verona, NJ
3-September-20112

16:08, 3rd OA, 2nd AG

Two bloody ringers showed up this year so I didn't get my free shoes, just a measly $15 to Fleet Feet. Humid as anything, say 95%, because the hot rain had just tapered off before the start. Everyone ran the first mile slow, but then picked it (at least us first three). Splits were 5:25, 10:35, 15:35ish.

Comparison of the previous years

2012, 16:08
2011, 16:04 http://bsergwreck.runboard.com/t15,offset=500
2010, 16:00 http://bsergwreck.runboard.com/t15,offset=380
2009, 15:55 http://bsergwreck.runboard.com/t15,offset=250

No idea why, and kind of eerie, that I've lost 4 seconds per year. This course, though, is tougher up front, and I hadn't paid attention to what previous years splits had been. Ah well, there's always next year. And I better not run a 16:12.

Rocky Mountain Shootout - 8k XC
Boulder, Co
9/30/2012

32:44, 189 OA

So this is the CU cross country invitational held each year at Buff Ranch. The course is a very tough cross country course with some solid hills, dirt/rocky paths, etc. I've run the course/area several times but after racing it yesterday will say it is easily one of my favorite, if not favorite overall, cross country course ever. It is a good fair challenge and what xc should be.

That all being said, going into this race I was not expecting much as far as times/results. I just started my training cycle for January's Goofy Challenge two weeks prior so I am still in the build-up phase and not particularly fit. This being a D1 invitational my honest goal was to simply not get DFL, which I missed by 13 places, though the wyoming guy who finished ~3sec behind me isn't in the results and not sure why not. I went out real conservative in the first 2 miles and picked it up as I went through the course. For those who don't know the course shape/profile it can be found at the link below.

http://www.cubuffs.com//pdf8/782089.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=600

Going into the smaller bottom loop I started picking up the pace some and passed a small pack; going up Jawbone Hill the second time took a lot out of me so I just maintained pace the rest of the way in until the final ~500m where I outkicked the aforementioned Wyoming guy.

I'm pretty pleased with this result given how tough the course is, the fact it's at altitude, and the fact that I'm in the very begining of Goofy training.

I would highly recommend for folks to come out and run this race in the future. It's an awesome race with great atmosphere and insane competition on a great course.

Also on one last side note, do not run Magnolia Road the day after racing Buff Ranch. I did that today and man was that killer. Mags always is tough/a grind so running today made it all that much more so. Good training though.

Bourbon Chase Relay
Kentucky (Clermont to Lexington)
28-29 September 2012

27:08:46, Team Shirlock, 49th/287

My legs were:
5.4mi leaving Heaven Hill Distillery around 4:15pm, 29:55
6.5mi going into Stanford, KY around 1:30am, 36:31
7.7mi going into Versailles (Ver-sales), KY around 9am, 45:07.

Those were my watch splits. Total race distance is ~199.5mi, so our team's average pace was about 8:10/mi (My average pace was 5:43ish). All the info is on bourbon chase.

Definitely a fun experience. If you've not done one of these 200mi overnight relays before, I definitely recommend it. Who knows, I may try to put one together one day (for once, I didn't organize something, my gf just called me and told me they needed another runner back in August). Definitely good tempo training for Wichita (19+mi at 5:40 pace is good, especially on limited/no sleep and uneven nutrition).

Looking forward to flying into Wichita next weekend; plan is for something in the 2:30 range (haven't figured it out yet, maybe 2:35).

Prairie Fire Marathon
Wichita, KS
14-October-2012

2:51:33, 6th OA, 1st AG

Well look at that, I missed the money by 1 place again (5th place would've gotten me a nice Benjamin). I didn't really crash in so much as my legs didn't work any more. I went in with the same idea as Chicago two years ago...go out at 6min pace and hold. Well, managed that through 20mi at least (last time I really remember a split), and then the legs started petering out...no more gas in the engine. The wind (constantly swirling 25mph no matter which direction we turned) and pace eventually caught up to me at the end.

Wonderful course, organization and Wichita is a nice small size city. Was very windy walking over to the start in the morning, felt ok, not spectacular, mind was generally blank. Sun was out (there ended up not being a cloud in the sky that day, so the sun also took its drain on me) when we started at 8am. Went out too fast in the first mile (5:30ish), saw that, and tried to ease off. Think I then hit 3mi in 17:30 (2mi in 11:30) and then stopped paying close attention to my splits because it appeared I was on 6min pace. Apparently not; hit 10k at 35:19 (5:41 pace), then 10M at 58:49. I saw the 58:49 and thought, ok, a little under 6min pace, but nothing that's killing me, without realizing that my pace from 10K to 10M dropped to 6:12 (I did all these calculations post-race), even though total pace was 5:53.

Then hit halfway in 1:17:27, which is about right where we merged again with the half marathoners. So that overall pace was the same (5:54) and the split pace right on 6min. Had to run with the half marathoners (I did my best to stay outside the cones, but I had to dodge through to get to the water stations) til about 18mi. I'm sure that took a lot out of me too. Was all by myself after I passed a guy right at 18mi, all the way to basically 24mi. Not a soul in sight. When I passed the guy at 18mi, I ended up with a bike escort; it didn't register in my head what that meant tho. Hit 20mi in 2:01:16, which says overall pace 6:04 (and split pace from halfway of 6:22). I knew I'd slowed down some, but didn't think it was significant to kill me yet.

Around 21.5mi, we actually ran through an area called Cow Town, which is similar to an old West setup with saloons and blacksmith shops and tumbleweed...also all on a dirt sandy route. That was okay, but my head was starting to hurt and my legs churning down. Remembering getting to the water station at 23mi around 2:23, and thought, hrm, that's almost 8min pace, this is gonna be difficult. I actually stopped there to walk a couple paces and drink. Kept going again, then I guess cracked when we met back up with the half marathoners (again! really?) at mi24. There I almost got blown over by the wind while walking a short spurt. Got to 25mi, and walked through the water station, then jogged the rest of the way in.

I passed a guy at the water station at 23mi who didn't have a bike escort, and then the guy who ended up 5th passed me somewhere between 24 and 25 and he took my bike escort. Calculations show my split pace for the last 10K at 8:05, which is certainly better than what I ran for Chicago, but it cost me $100. So the legs never tightened up or hurt, they just wouldn't turn over 6min miles anymore (or 7min miles).

Overall, other than the wind (uncontrollable) and the merging with halvers (they could probably do something about this, but there were only about 700 full and 2500 half, so it's not a huge race), the race was excellent. It (like Milwaukee), I would love another crack at it.

Re: Race Results

I'll make this a multiple race result posting, since I've been under a rock for most of the fall.

USATFNJ 8K XC
28-October-2012
Readington, NJ

27:16, 9th OA
Solid cross country time, I thought, for a blustery day (the hurricane came thru a day and a half later). 3-loop course, which helped me keep track of pace, since there were no mile markers. Was happy with it, then went home and prepared for Sandy, which for me turned out, thankfully, to be only a whimper on the radar. Results on compuscore.com

Giralda Farms 10K
11-Nov-2012
Madison, NJ

33:44, 6th OA
Guess what? 1 place out of the money again (would've only been $25 for fifth place, and I got a $25 gift card for first in my AG). Was actually a rather warm, high 50s, sunny day. But I didn't run well on the course; every mile was either uphill or downhill, so my splits went back and forth between 5:10s and 5:40s. Would've liked a colder day. Results on compuscore.com

Boulevard Bolt 5M
22-Nov-2012
Nasvhille, TN

26:38, 4th OA
Wonderful weather for this Turkey Trot on a gently rolling out and back course. Top two guys just blistered the field (4:50 pace), and the third guy was well in front (I'd also seen him beat me at Prairie Fire Marathon of all places). Think I actually ran negative splits on this one; might've helped that Allie and I ran most of the course the day before. Results on boulevardbolt.com

Race Results Blitz:

August 25: 5K for Hope, Decatur GA 17:10 1st OA
same course as the fast Hearts and Soles, but they took us quite long on this one

September 9: Atlanta Ekiden, Atlanta GA 18:51 anchor, Team 2nd Mixed
I ran this with some bad Strep Throat. I was pretty pleased with the time given that. The saving grace was that it was the nicest weather I've ever run in at Ekiden

October 7: Chicago Marathon, Chicago IL 2:51:37 400 OA
All the problems from Boston (Hypothermia) combined with the problems from Miami (vomiting and nausea) to make this a miserable race. Managed the faster time than either of those due to a fast course and a little more mental strength. Pretty much just kept going once I finished and went straight to a train to warm up. I was shivering so violently I could be barely stand.

Injured for the rest of October after the marathon

November 17 Xterra Little Mulberry Park 10K, Dacula GA 37:15 2nd OA
Absolutely incredible hills, the toughest I've come across in any race. I felt like this was a pretty good comeback race. Managed to outduel the also coming back Matt Rivers.

December 15: Big Dog Jingle 5K, Columbus GA, 16:37, 2nd OA
Was expecting a pretty weak field, but got destroyed at this race

December 22: Atlanta Christmas 5K (the race formerly known as the Virginia Highland Christmas 5K) Atlanta GA 17:00 4th OA
This was only kind of a race. Friday afternoon a coworker said that his wife wasn't running and asked if I wanted her number. So I decided to jump in and do it kind of for fun. I had done a couple of hard workouts leading up to it so I wasn't expecting much. So I didn't put much into this race and I still ran 11 seconds faster than last year on a very tough course so I was pretty happy with that.

Jessica had a somewhat more successful string of racing over this stretch. She ran the fastest female leg for Runnin' Wreck at Ekiden, she won the Northface Endurance Challenge 50K by 32 minutes over the next woman and was second OA in her ultra debut, the following weekend she won the Auburn Tough Ten Miler. At the Xterra race I did she beat 19 time Xterra Champion Tara Gormley by a minute to win (to remain unbeaten in trail races). She also won the Big Dog Jingle by 3 minutes.

PT Solutions Resolution Run 5K, Kennesaw GA, 1/1/2013

16:46, 2nd OA, 1st AG

Not the most fun of conditions, run in a downpour in 48 degree weather. Course has a number of gradual climbs but nothing too crazy. I got blasted again, this time by one of the Ethiopians from the Oklahoma State CC team with a 13:47 PR. So I was at least first American Born finisher. Overall I felt pretty good, just found it hard to push any harder in the downpour where I was 30s ahead of 3rd and the leader is who knows how far ahead. The current results on the Atlanta Track Club Site are quite fouled up, the timing system messed up in the rain somehow. Jessica did not have to beat any Ethiopians and got a 43 second victory. I think I'm all set for Disney, I just have to stay healthy and injury free till then.

Rutgers Big Chill 5K
New Brunswick, NJ
8-December-20112

15:59, 1st OA

Probably the best weather I've had yet, and the best I've felt at this race (also helped that lots of NJ runners were out doing XC Nats). A bunch of college kids sprinted out hard at the beginning which probably forced Rich to go out too fast. I went thru 1mi around 5:10 (Rich leading and I was in 4th). Dropped two guys going into the park a quarter mile later and just started focusing on Rich. I think my 2mi split was even, and I was noticing Rich coming back to me. Zig-zagged out of the park and finally caught up to him with about .4 or .5mi left. Decided to just sit on his shoulder til the final turn, leaving me a good 200 or 300m to the finish. Rich was gassed and I just blew by him.

And Allie won quite handily too, with an okay-by-her-standards 18:45.

So we each won $50 to some wine bar in New Brunswick (not sure when we'll be back there until next December) and $45 each to Outback Steakhouse. So equivalent of $190 gift cards between the two of us. Not bad for giving some kids gifts for Christmas (the entry "fee"). More detail on Big Chill Website

Comparison of the previous years

2012, 15:59
2011, 16:41 2011 notes
2010, 16:25 2010 notes
2009, 17:09 2009 notes

Fluctuation over the years is fun to look at. Basically you can throw 2011 out because I was recovering from a thrown out back/bad hip from the snowstorm (that screwed me up in NYC). And there's still the fact that this course is a little long (by about 0.1mi), so using last year's calculation, this year translates to 15:40

Had a good couple weeks in December of training (didn't manage the kind of workouts I had before Prairie Fire, but I do like, much more, the short training cycles...they don't burn me out). So on the taper now (except for the past two days with good 6:20 pace tempo runs).

Feeling excited and ready for Disney. My plan is going to be an overall pace around 6:45. So run the half marathon between 1:25 and 1:30 (try not to push myself early, but finish strong). And then do the full the next day about the same. Main goal is total time less than 4hrs 30min, but a nice 1:25 and 2:55 (4:20 total) would be excellent.

Goofy Challenge, Lake Buena Vista, FL
(yes, it's technically Lake Buena Vista and not Orlando)

Walt Disney World Half Marathon (Donald Duck)
1:25:47, 76th OA (of 23,126)
12-January-2013

Walt Disney World Marathon (Mickey Mouse)
2:54:07, 26th OA (of 20,679)
13-January-2013

Yup, I reallly do like winter marathons (e.g. Miami, Houston, Mardi Gras). I always seem to be relaxed and able to deal with the heat and humidity.

The plan for this was average pace of 6:45 across both races. Nailed it with 6:32/mile in the half and 6:38/mile in the full. (I checked my split pacing for the full, I was actually on 6:30 pace and should've finished about 2:49 or 2:50, but the wear on my body caught up to me in the last 6mi, where I averaged about 7:05 pace)

So, I absolutely went out to enjoy myself in the half marathon. Yucked it up for the cameras and encouraged other runners that I passed. Got as much rest as I could Saturday afternoon so I could get up at 3am again for another 5:30am start on Sunday. So much less crowded getting to the start area on Sunday morning (as compared to Saturday). Was actually kind of tired and not looking forward to it. Smartest idea from the weekend: bring a plastic water bottle into the start corral so you have something to drink till the last minute, especially in hot/humid races.

Actually hopped out over the fence to make a pit stop in the woods 10min before the gun. Banged my right knee on the way back over, but it didn't bother me til Monday. Went out on about the same pace and tried to enjoy it as much as possible, and get as far along as possible before the sun came up, which was probably sometime while I was in ESPN Wide World of Sports. Not sure when/where, but I felt like I was tired starting at the stupid racetrack circuit at mile9, but my legs kept going at 6:30 pace anyway. They started to crack a little bit again going thru ESPN. I think this might be because of the stupid sharp turns...it really kills the momentum and fluidity.

Because I felt fine pushing back away from ESPN toward MGM. Came close to cracking again in the stupid workshop tunnel, but I really was all by myself from the moment I entered that tunnel, until the turn away from the lake in Epcot. I don't think in that about 3mi stretch I passed or got passed by another runner. And about 3 passed me in the last half mile; at the time I didn't care, but I should have because I was in 5th in my AG, and got knocked back to 6th by one of the runners. Gawrsh!

Came out of it all fine except for a purple toe (which I still have) and the bum knee I had on Monday. Looking forward to another non-windy course in Cary, NC.

Super Sunday 4-Miler
Morristown, NJ

21:19 1st OA
3-February-2013

Temperature was about 28°F, yards were covered in snow, but roads were clean and traction normal. I did make some wide turns in case the salt made any slick spots, but it was all okay.

Wasn't thinking about it beforehand, but should've assumed that my splits would be all over the pace because of hills from 1.5mi to 2.5mi. Went through 1M in 5:05, which was faster than I thought I was running. Just before 2M (10:35, 5:30)), caught the guy who was leading (normally he'd destroy me, but he hasn't trained much since last fall) and settled into the lead with another guy. A nice steep "freshman hill" right at 2.75mi slowed us down. He pulled in front and I hung on his tail about 3 yards back. The last 1.25mi is flat and straight except for a bump and a couple turns in the last quarter mile. 3M in 16:18 (5:43)

About a half mile to go, I put on a spurt that he matched. Made a right to go up the bump and put another spurt on. I think this finally broke him, because two lefts later with the finish in front, I couldn't see him out of the corner of my eye. So, last mile in about 5:01.

Good solid 4M course. Good tune-up for H&S5K in a couple days. Results on compuscore.com
